What These Terms Mean · 名词解释
BaZi (八字) · “Eight Characters” — a traditional Chinese way of writing a birth moment: four pairs of characters for year, month, day and hour. Each pair is one Heavenly Stem (天干) plus one Earthly Branch (地支).
The Four Pillars (四柱) — those four pairs. Each pillar marks one layer of the birth moment, and together they form a symbolic profile used in traditional Chinese culture.
Day Master (日主) — the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar; in the tradition it stands for the person at the centre of the chart.
Wu Xing (五行) · Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water: five traditional modes of change rather than physical materials. A chart is often described by how strongly each one appears.
Heavenly Stem / Earthly Branch — two old Chinese counting systems for time. Ten stems and twelve branches combine into the 60-pair cycle still used for years, months, days and hours.
